Our Vision

CTA African-American Caucus

The California Teachers Association (CTA) African American Caucus believes in the worth and dignity of all people. 

Caucus members will take an active role in making policies and decisions that affect African American teacher and students.

We will actively participate in all local, state and national teachers unions, associations and support the goals, objectives, policies and programs of CTA affecting African American teachers and students.

The Lois M. Tinson Memorial Scholarship

Lois M. Tinson was the first African American to serve as President of the California Teachers Association (1994-1999). She was one of the founding members of the CTA African American Caucus and the Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee (now REAC).

PURPOSE

  • In 1991, the African American Caucus established the Lois M. Tinson Scholarship to aid African Americans in preparing for teaching careers in public education.

GOAL

  • The California Teachers Association and the African American Caucus recognizes the shortage of African American Teachers in California.  The goal of the scholarship is to encourage African American students to become teachers.

THE FUND

  • The Scholarship is supported by voluntary contributions. Amounts vary each year depending on the amount of contributions.

APPLICATION

  • Scholarship application forms are available each year and may be obtained from members of the African American Caucus.

ELIGIBILITY

  • In order to be eligible, an applicant must be pursuing a teaching career in public education and be of African American decent.
